What is Hull Rape Crisis?

We are a locally based charity that offers counselling and support to help you address feelings and issues you may be experiencing following a rape or sexual assault. The service is available to all and is a confidential service. We offer  free confidential face to face counselling and a helpline.  As well as counselling, we offer support or information for you, your friends and your family. It can take years for a person to realise that they haven’t ‘got over’ the abuse.  People do not get over rape or sexual abuse.  Hull Rape Crisis can help people to learn to live with themselves again

If you don’t feel ready to see someone in person, just ring our phone line during opening times and you can gain support and contact by somebody who understands. Some of the people who contact Hull Rape Crisis have experienced sexual abuse as children.  Often they have never told anyone of their experiences and have struggled along through their lives which have been overwhelmed by the effects of abuse. It is very important to find support.  Secrecy and silence are part of the abuse.  So healing in isolation is nearly impossible.

It takes a great deal of courage for people to reveal the abuse.

A person’s life can be totally disrupted by a sexual assault and there are often few sympathetic and understanding people they can turn to. Hull Rape Crisis is staffed by a group of people who are there to help others who have been raped or sexually assaulted.  Anyone can contact us for emotional and practical support.  No problem is too small or unimportant if it is causing worry and distress. Hull Rape Crisis provides comprehensive service for anyone in the Hull and East Riding area that has been sexually assaulted, whether recently or in the past.  Our services are available to everyone.  Where possible we will provide an interpreter if you need one.

The trauma does not stop when the abuse stops

What is counselling?
Counselling is a way for you to think and talk about how you feel.  The counsellors at Hull Rape Crisis can help you deal with your feelings after a sexual assault or rape.  Talking with a counsellor can help you:

  • Understand how the experience has affected you
  • Cope with any changes and difficulties resulting from it
  • Adapt to life afterward

What does the counsellor do?
The counsellor meets you for the appointments, usually once a week, they will not criticise you or judge you and will support you through this experience.   The counsellor can also offer other information and support.

What do I have to do?
Counselling is ‘client led’ which means you are in control of the sessions.  It is up to you to decide which aspects you wish to talk about.  It is your decision to choose.

How long will it take?
Each session lasts 50 minutes.  Initially the first session is getting to know each other.  The number of sessions you attend is different for everyone.
